About BHON
The Black Experience
The Black experience often includes systemic challenges in accessing fair employment opportunities, financial services, and lending. These are key factors necessary for homeownership and long-term financial stability. These barriers contribute to unequal outcomes that make it more difficult for many Black individuals and families to achieve economic security and a high quality of life.
Research consistently shows that homeownership is one of the primary ways families build and pass on generational wealth. This reality highlights the urgent need for greater financial inclusion and equitable access to real estate, credit, employment, and other wealth-building opportunities within Black communities.L'expérience noire
Affordable Housing
Across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, research shows that a disproportionate number of Black individuals and families are renters rather than homeowners. Many live with ongoing uncertainty, facing the risk of sudden rent increases or unfair evictions that threaten housing stability.
At the same time, rising housing costs are pricing many Black renters out of first-time homeownership, while bias and limited affordability continue to restrict access to safe, quality rental options. Addressing these challenges is essential to achieving meaningful equity, inclusion, and long-term housing security for Black communities.

It’s depressing that black homeownership rate and overall wealth gap have reached alarming levels. The black homeownership rate has persistently lagged behind that of white families, a gap that has widened since the Great Recession. In 2017, the black homeownership rate (41.8 percent) was the lowest of all racial and ethnic groups. Between 2000 and 2017, the black homeownership rate dropped 4.8 percentage points, a loss of about 770,000 black homeowners, while the homeownership rates of other racial and ethnic groups either remained constant or increased.

Black Americans still pay more than any other group to own a home, a disparity that over 30 years contributes to roughly half the current $130,000 gap between Blacks and whites in savings at retirement, a recent Massachusetts Institute of Technology study shows. The annual difference of $743 in mortgage interest payments, $550 in mortgage insurance premiums and $390 in property taxes, when invested over 30 years results in lost retirement savings of $67,320 for Black homeowners, according to the study called “The Unequal Costs of Black Homeownership.”
